Just as grace is necessary for salvation, even so also for the ministry of the word (v. 7). It is a gift given by the working of HIS power! Any true minister of the word knows that he is least, because then God is the greatest. It is a word which is also sovereignly given as revelation, and not a man’s imagination, of “the riches of Christ.” (v. 8) The mystery of this worldwide transethnic transnational good news was known in past ages, but not as it is now in the age of the messianic kingdom (v. 9). It expresses how the creator of all things intends to redeem all things, through the preaching of the word alone, Christ alone, faith alone, which comes by grace alone, “so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.” The Messiah’s kingdom therefore encompasses heaven and earth.“ This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in him.” (vv. 11-12) From eternity this has always been the plot line of the story, and anyone who lacks confidence needs to take heed, for the Spirit continues to exhort us to “not lose heart” over any suffering that may ensue, which is to our glory in Him (v. 13).
