Amos 2:6-16 Israel’s Hatred For The Law And The Prophets.
For Israel wealth was primary over all else, selling the righteous and the poor by depriving them of the last of their possessions (v. 6). They also perverted basic human relations, “a man and his father go in to the same girl, to defile My holy name” (v. 7 Cf. Lev. 18:6-8). They delighted in doing what they knew was contrary to the law, including idolatry (v. 8). They did all this even though they knew the history of the LORD faithfully delivering the covenanted people (vv. 9-10). It was all rooted in their hatred of the prophets, doing everything they could to silence them, because they brought the word to bear on their wickedness (vv. 11-12). As a consequence, the LORD would not help Israel to defend itself, instead they would go into captivity (vv. 13-16).
