Zechariah 8 Covenantal Blessings For The Remnant And The Nations.

The LORD of hosts was zealous for Zion (vv. 1-2). When the LORD returns to Jerusalem then it “shall be called the City of Truth…the Holy Mountain” (v. 3). Once again it will be a place for the old and the young (vv. 4-5). The LORD’s return was in behalf of the remnant, to save His true people (vv. 6-7). In the “remnant according to the election of grace” (Rom. 11:5), the core of the covenant relationship would be fulfilled: “They shall be my people and I will be their God, in truth and righteousness” (v. 8). Those who received the words of the prophets would be made strong (v. 9). When the nation was previously under a covenantal curse, their was no goods to pay for workers, and everyone was preoccupied with defending themselves against their enemies (v. 10). “‘But now I will treat the remnant of this people as in the former days,’ says the LORD of hosts” (v. 11). The remnant will be blessed with abundance from the earth, because instead of a curse they would be blessed (vv. 12-13). Instead of punishment and calamity, the LORD would do them good (vv. 14-15).

As a result of this mercy from the LORD, the remnant would speak the truth, and give judgment in their “gates for truth, justice, and peace” (v. 16). The remnant would be those who gave evidence of their election by following the law-word of the covenant, to not think evil against one’s neighbour, including not bearing false witness (v. 17). With the remnant, religious duties like a fast, would be joyful for there will be a love for truth and peace (v. 18). In this new Jerusalem many other peoples would come to also experience these blessings of the LORD’s covenant people-chief of which would be the seeking out of the LORD and prayer to Him (vv. 20-22). The remnant would also be the bearers of good news to the nations of the world. The LORD would give to His faithful remnant a great commission. “Thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘In those days ten men from every language of the nations shall grasp the sleeve of a Jewish man, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you’” (v. 23).
