Zechariah 6:9-15 Casting Crowns Before The BRANCH.
People from Babylon came to help build the temple and the city, bearing gifts (v. 9). With the gold and silver the prophet was to make a crown for Joshua the high priest (v. 10). However, although there was an immediate application at the time, the prophet also prophesied of One to come, “the Man whose name is the BRANCH” (vv. 11-12 Cf. 3:1, 8; Ex. 29:6; Ezra 3:2; Is. 4:2; 11:1; Jer. 23:5; 33:15; Hag. 1:1; Mt. 16:18; Jn. 2:19-21; I Cor. 3:16-17; Eph. 2:19-21; Heb. 3:3). This BRANCH would “branch out,” meaning that His house would go beyond the boundaries of the house being built by the prophet’s contemporaries. His temple would “bear the glory,” which refers to the Glory-Presence of the LORD of hosts, the place from which He would sit and rule.
Furthermore, unlike the Aaronic and Levitical order, this High Priest would also reign as King (v. 13 Cf. Is. 22:24; Ps. 110:4). In the BRANCH there would be peace between the two offices. The prophet then adds that among the gifts brought would be crowns (literally), which would be “a memorial in the temple of the LORD” (v. 14a). Again, the BRANCH will branch out and, “even those from afar shall come and build the temple of the LORD” (v. 15a). This is one of the signs that the people would know that the BRANCH had come (v. 15b). The command was and remains, that His people “obey the voice of the LORD your God” (v. 15c). “The twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before His throne” (Rev. 4:10).
