Genesis 4:25-5:32 The Godly Line And Hope Of Rest.
Eve called her next son Seth, which means “appointed” because she believed that God had “appointed another seed” in place of Abel (4:25). She no doubt kept the gospel promise of 3:14-15 in view. Seth in turn had a son whom he named Enosh. In the genealogy which follows we see it begin with Adam, whom God created in His likeness (5:1). “He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them Mankind” (v. 2). Adam had other sons and daughters, but it is through Seth that his genealogy is traced. This genealogy is traced all the way to Noah whose name means “rest”. There is this promise of rest through the appointed Seed which runs throughout the scriptures, in response to the curse as a result of sin. Noah received his name because his parents believed that “this one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD has cursed” (5:29). It is in this godly line that “men began to call on the name of the LORD” (4:26).
