The Psalms

Psalm 117 Merciful Kindness And Truth.

Thankfully with the covenant making and covenant keeping LORD truth and mercy are inseparable (v. 2). If all we had was truth, the truth is we are fallen and deserving of judgment. On the other hand, if all we had was mercy it would be pointless, for why is mercy needed if there is no truth about our condition? It is what the psalmist gives glory to God for in 115. Psalm 117 is a brief call to the Gentiles, that is, the nations outside of Israel, the peoples, to join with Israel in giving praise to the LORD. This psalm is thus quoted by Paul to prove the validity of his ministry (v. 1 Rom. 15:11). “His merciful kindness is great toward us, and the truth of the LORD endures forever.” (v. 2 Cf. Ps. 100:5).
